About

Hey, I’m Doug! I’m a native Californian who loves colonial architecture (obviously), traveling, and sports, among many other things. Right now, I’m based in Taipei, exploring new places in the world and soaking in everything I can in Asia.

I’ve always been interested in exploring, wherever it may be. Going on an unforgettable journey to Europe in 2005 that expanded my perspective and knowledge was my first taste of traveling. And I later took Chinese language and philosophy courses at Gonzaga University, thinking that someday I’d have the chance to live in Asia. Two years after graduation, desiring a big change, I booked a one way ticket to Taiwan and never looked back.

Inspired by colonial architecture in Hong Kong on a trip for Christmas of 2015, I began to study more on the subject. I traveled to Myanmar in February of 2017, arguably the finest place  in the world for viewing colonial architecture, and left feeling it was something that I’d love to continue to learn more and write about. I enjoy colonial architecture’s variety and beauty, as well as its impact on our society today.

So here it is, GoingColonial.com! My goal is to provide you with travel inspiration and knowledge through a colonial architectural lens, hoping that you ‘go colonial’ by getting involved in the preservation of colonial or any kind of historical structures wherever you are in the world. I hope you enjoy it! Feel free to reach out doug@goingcolonial.com and let me know what you think!
